5 Local Spots Near Elkin to Make the Most of Late Summer
Getting out on the Yadkin is one of the easiest ways to spend a summer afternoon near Elkin.School may be back and fall may be creeping closer, but around Elkin, summer isn't quite finished yet! And one of the best parts about living around Elkin is that you don't have to travel far to find your next adventure.
Here are our top 5 local spots that are must hits.
Yadkin River
One of the longest rivers in North Carolina, the Yadkin flows right through the Elkin area and offers plenty of ways to enjoy the last warm days of summer. Float down the river in an inner tube, fish from the riverbank, or launch a kayak or boat from the ramp at Crater Park. Make a full weekend of it by camping at RiverWalk RV Park—spend your days on the water and your evenings making memories around the campfire.
The E&A Rail Trail
Follows an old rail corridor out of town and is one of the easiest trails around for a family walk, a mountain bike ride, or even a little trout fishing along the way. This trail is perfect for a morning stroll with the kids, since it's stroller- and bicycle-friendly, or just to enjoy the outdoors.
Stone Mountain State Park
Just 30 minutes from Elkin, Stone Mountain State Park makes an easy day trip with plenty to explore. Hike the trails, fish, camp, or take in the incredible views of the 600-foot granite dome the park is known for. You can also step back in time at the historic Hutchinson Homestead or explore some of the beautiful waterfalls throughout the park.
For a more accessible waterfall option, Widow’s Creek Falls is especially high on our list. It’s one of the park’s easiest waterfalls to reach, located less than a mile from the parking area. With rocks to sit on and shallow areas where little ones can splash, it’s a great place to slow down and cool off on a late-summer day. Pack some snacks and make a day of it!
If you’re up for a challenge, the hike to the top of Stone Mountain loop trail is worth the climb. The trail gets steep in places, but the wide-open views from the granite summit stretch across the surrounding mountains and make every step feel worthwhile.

Stone Mountain holds a special place in the heart of Adana, one of our team members. She remembers visiting often when she was younger—hiking the trails, sharing the kinds of conversations that only seem to happen outdoors, enjoying picnics surrounded by nature, and sliding down the rocks at Widow’s Creek Falls. Those are memories she still treasures today.
The Blue Ridge Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway is an easy drive from Elkin and one of the best places to enjoy a slower kind of adventure. Pack a picnic, stop at a few scenic overlooks, take a short hike, or simply roll down the windows and enjoy the mountain views. You don’t need a full itinerary—choose a stretch to explore and leave time to stop whenever a view catches your eye.
Late summer brings green mountain views and cooler temperatures, while the first hints of fall color make the drive even more beautiful. It’s also one of our favorite backdrops for family photos, especially around sunset..
W. Kerr Scott Lake
For another easy day on the water, W. Kerr Scott Lake is hard to beat. The 1,475-acre reservoir offers boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and a designated swimming beach at Fort Hamby Park. Bring your own watercraft or rent one locally, with seven public boat ramps available around the lake. Camp overnight at Bandits Roost, Warrior Creek, or Fort Hamby to make a full weekend of it.
Some of Adana's favorite lake memories include camping at Bandits Roost, riding bikes with her sibling, making s'mores around the campfire, and fishing on the boat dock. The kind of simple outdoor fun that makes this place so special.
